Why do we love Balvenie?
Balvenie is known to many as the sister to Glenfiddich, after William Grant built the new distillery right next door to the Glenfiddich distillery, only 5 years after it was created. This new distillery was fitted out with second-hand stills from Lagavulin on Islay and Glen Albyn in Inverness, ensuring it started with stills already seasoned and proven to create fine whisky. The result is a dram that is noticeably different to its big brother Glenfiddich. As David Stewart, The Balvenie Malt Master, explains, “There is a honeyed sweetness right through The Balvenie from the new make spirit. It’s sweet, biscuity, and malty. It’s more fruity, floral, and aromatic than Glenfiddich, with deeper malt notes.”
This Balvenie 1991 is a rare official bottling that is highly coveted by fans of the distillery. It was distilled in the Speyside region of Scotland and has been finished in Port wood casks, adding to its depth of flavour.
